We worship because of what God has done for us, not because of what we have done for God. Worship is our response to God’s revelation of Himself through creation, through His Word and the Holy Spirit. When we worship, we proclaim God’s rightful place in our lives, thanking and praising the Lord for His unending promises. God is faithful, from the beginning to the end.
Worship is not only something we do when we feel good. No, to the contrary, Scripture is filled with examples of worshipping precisely when things seem most difficult. Worship brings us into God’s presence. There is no safer place we can be than in His hands, especially when we’re hurting. Worship allows us to experience God fully.
But the hour is coming, and is now here, when the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth, for the Father is seeking such people to worship him. God is spirit, and those who worship him must worship in spirit and truth.”
John 4:23-24 ESV
Through worship, we can focus on who God is and what He has done in our lives. When we worship, we take our eyes off of ourselves and turn our eyes to the Lord. Worship isn’t about us. It’s about God and God alone. He is our utmost, our highest, our all in all. We worship the Lord because He alone is worthy. Thus, we exalt His name above the earth, shouting Hallelujah from the rooftops.
God has promised that when we worship Him, He will be present. Our Creator God desires a relationship with us. He wants to fellowship with us, just as He did back in the days of Adam and Eve in the Garden. When we worship, we create a meeting place with God where we can fully embrace His invitation to join Him for the works He has prepared ahead of time for us. It is as if we have returned to the Garden and can walk with Him and He with us.
Worship celebrates God at work in our lives. Worship acknowledges God’s rightful place at the head of the table. It’s God’s party. We’re simply the special guests attending at His invitation.
In light of all God has done, worship is the only way we can rightfully respond.
