The necessary effort to slow the spread of COVID-19 has had devasting effects on our economy, including unprecedented job loss. Unprecedented and unusual are two words that tag along COVID-19 like warts on a bullfrog. People everywhere around the world are unable to go to work or worse yet, have experienced the loss of their job entirely. Recovery from job loss doesn’t happen overnight. It doesn’t begin until someone without an old job finds a new job.
Here is my prayer for them (join me in praying for the unemployed).
A Prayer for the Unemployed
Thank You, O Lord for our world and our nation. Thank You, Lord, for the blessings You bestowed upon us in the past. We thank You, Our Almighty God, for the provision You have given us before this crisis hit our shores. We recognize that You are a God who is able to do far more immeasurably and abundantly than our minds and hearts can conceive. Lord, we are grateful for the talents You have given each and every person on this planet. For the workers in our country who have lost their jobs, we ask for Your hedge of protection over their lives. Let them not be discouraged. May they not be dismayed. Help them turn their eyes to You, O Great Lord. People matter to You. Each of us has value in Your eyes. Forgive us when we fall prey to our sinful nature and hoard resources unfairly, only thinking of ourselves and not what our neighbors might need. We lift up to You, Almighty God, all those who have lost their jobs, whose careers have been disrupted and upended, who don’t know how they will pay their bills or feed their families due to losing their livelihood. Give them hope, help them see, that this too shall pass. Allow us to discover new patterns of working and keep us from feeling useless, unproductive, unfulfilled, and unwanted. Help us help others as we who have jobs pray for those without work. May they find new work soon so that they can continue onward to the next chapter in the story of their life. To You be all the power, honor, and all the glory. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
