My Monday Morning Cup | May My Words Fuel Life

A friend of mine likes to quip that it’s hard to remember your job is to drain the pond when you’re standing knee deep in alligators. In a world filled with turbulence and turmoil, it can be easy for us, as believers, to lose sight of what we are called to do. In his letter to the Corinthians, Paul points out that as believers we ARE ambassadors for Christ.

So, during these challenging, difficult times, do my words fuel life?

As an ambassador for Christ, my role in this world is to live a life subjectated to my Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. An ambassador represents his King. My words have the power to breathe life into people and bring peace into a situtation or my words can spew hatred and fuel discord. As a representative of the Most High, my job is to be a vessel of unity, a beacon of love, and an anchor of truth.

2 Corinthians 5:18-20 ¹⁸All this is from God, who reconciled us to himself through Christ and gave us the ministry of reconciliation: ¹⁹that God was reconciling the world to himself in Christ, not counting people’s sins against them. And he has committed to us the message of reconciliation. ²⁰We are therefore Christ’s ambassadors, as though God were making his appeal through us. We implore you on Christ’s behalf: Be reconciled to God.

It can be tempting, during these divisive times, to add our viewpoint to the discussion. But, as an ambassador for Christ, my view gives way to His. My voice should speak life not add poison to the vitrolic conversation. My words should breathe wisdom into the troubling situations those I minister to and that I am responsible for shepherding face on a daily basis. While current events consume the headlines, many people have enough troubles of their own to resolve without heaping the world’s problems on their plate.

Amid the current climate of anger, accusation, bitterness, divisieness, and hate, how can we effectively represent our Lord and Savior? As ambassadors for Christ we represent the message and ministry of reconciliation made possible through the shed blood of Jesus, the Son of God. We must leave our selfish ambitions behind and take up the work of the Cross. Therefore, we should put away words of malice, slander, and obscenities.

In Scripture, Jesus commands us to love one another. He does not qualify who we should love except that we are to love others. Others are anyone who isn’t us. Others means anyone different from ourselves. Loving our neighbors for the sake of the Gospel doesn’t mean only those neighbors we like, agree with, or would like to see in Heaven some day. As ambassadors for Christ, we must strive to be the standardbearers of what it means to live out the Gospel.

God remains at work all around us. As believers, our job is to find where He is at work and join Him. As ambassadors for Christ, our role is to live out the Gospel through our words and deeds so that we point others to the Cross and avoid pushing them away from Christ. We are messengers of God’s love and truth in a lost and fallen world. As ambassadors for Christ, we must speak the words of love and share the truth of life we have come to know through Jesus, our Lord and Savior. His message reigns supreme over our own. His message should become ours. As a result, our words should fuel life.
