In this post, we will examine one my personal favorite parables- “The Widow’s Mite.” This powerful parable from the Bible teaches us a profound lesson about generosity that I think transcends time and remains highly relevant in our daily lives today.
Jesus looked up and saw the rich putting their gifts into the offering box, and he saw a poor widow put in two small copper coins. And he said, “Truly, I tell you, this poor widow has put in more than all of them. For they all contributed out of their abundance, but she out of her poverty put in all she had to live on.”

The Parable of the Widow’s Mite
In the Gospel of Luke(21:1-4), we find the story of a poor widow who offered her two small coins (mites) at the temple, while the wealthy and well-to-do individuals around her made substantial donations.
Jesus, observing this act of generosity, remarked that the widow’s small offering was worth more in God’s eyes than all the wealth given by others.
Why is this parable so enduring and impactful?
Lessons in Generosity
1. The Power of Sacrifice
The widow’s mite was not just about the amount she gave but the sacrifice behind it. She gave all she had, whereas others gave out of their abundance. This parable teaches us that generosity is not about the quantity we give but the sincerity and sacrifice with which we give.
2. Generosity Beyond Wealth
The parable emphasizes that generosity is not limited to financial wealth. We can be generous with our time, love, attention, and compassion. It reminds us that even the smallest acts of kindness can have a profound impact.
3. God’s Perspective
From God’s perspective, the widow’s offering was more significant because it represented a higher percentage of her resources. This challenges us to consider how we evaluate generosity. Are we generous in proportion to our means, or do we hold back out of fear or selfishness?
4. Humility and Selflessness
The widow’s actions were humble and selfless. She didn’t seek recognition or praise, which is a valuable lesson in the humility that should accompany our acts of generosity.
True generosity is often quiet and unassuming.
How Do We Apply Generosity in Our Lives?
Now that we’ve dissected the lessons from the Widow’s Mite, how can we apply this wisdom to our lives?
- Give from the heart: Generosity is about the intention behind our actions. Give with a sincere heart, whether it’s your time, resources, or kindness.
- Sacrifice when you can: Like the widow, be willing to make sacrifices for a greater good. Sometimes, the most meaningful gifts are those that require us to give up something of value.
- Value humility: Avoid seeking recognition or praise for your generosity. Acts of kindness are their own reward.
- Expand the definition of wealth: Remember that wealth isn’t just about money. Share your knowledge, skills, and love generously with those around you.
“The Widow’s Mite” parable beautifully illustrates the timeless principle that generosity goes beyond the size of the gift. It’s about the spirit in which we give and the impact it has on others. As we embrace these lessons and apply them in our lives, we can all become more generous individuals, making the world a better place, one act of kindness at a time.
