If you’ve been following my blog, you’ve probably heard me mention that I’m in the process of clearing out our storage, garage, and sunroom. I’m excited to share that a few weeks ago I actually managed to finish cleaning out our offsite storage.
Yay! Team Bantau!

One space down, a few more to go.
Now, let me be clear—this “detox” I keep talking about isn’t about alcohol or substance abuse. I am clean and sober and have been continuously for 30 years. My detox is about something different: I’m intentionally clearing out the physical clutter, as well as the emotional baggage and spiritual noise that can quietly pile up in life. For me, this season is about stripping away the excess and reconnecting my soul to what’s truly essential.
Decluttering has become one of my focus points during my sabbatical. Every time I pick up a box, sort through a pile, or let go of something I don’t need anymore, I feel like I’m also making space in my heart, mind and soul. It’s a huge relief! The simple act of clearing out isn’t just about organizing and cleaning up the clutter. It’s about creating room for who and what really matters.
I’m learning that when we hold on to too much, whether it’s stuff in our closets, unresolved emotions, or distractions that cloud our spirit, it becomes harder to hear God’s voice and harder to notice what brings life and joy. When we let go by actively and intentionally clearing out the clutter, we create a spaciousness that allows peace to grow.

So while I am hauling boxes from point A to point B and sorting through old books and assorted papers, I’m also asking myself deeper questions:
- What’s weighing me down?
- What needs to be released so I can breathe more freely?
- How can I make more space for God, for creativity, and for love?
This is the detox I’m after. Not punishment. Not restriction. Freedom. A lighter step, a clearer mind, a soul that’s tuned in and connected to God and the people around me.
And honestly, I’m starting to see that this process isn’t just about the garage, the storage unit, or the sunroom. It’s really about me and what’s good for my soul.
A Reflection for You:
Hebrews 12:1 reminds us to “throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles.” Just as clearing out our homes helps us breathe easier, releasing spiritual and emotional clutter helps us run our race with endurance.

A Challenge for You:
What’s one small area—physical, emotional, or spiritual—that you could clear out this week to make more room for what matters most?

Until my next post…
Be salty, stay lit.

I will keep that in mind, Bridget. But I wouldn’t wait on me. It’s proving to be a slow process, albeit worthwhile. I’m happy that you found my post helpful! Thanks so much for reading and responding.

I love this post, and the questions you asked. This is a good exercise to go through. And as far as clutter goes – I needed this inspiration. I don’t like clutter. But I’ve also been in a slump lately, and therefore not diligent about getting rid of things that I ought. My sister and I have been dealing with our parents stuff too. My mother is a hoarder, so it’s been overwhelming. You’re welcome to help me when you’re done at your home 😂 … I’m going to save this post for when I need some motivation. Thank you!
