Honing Our Understanding of What God Has Called Us to Do

A question many believers wrestle with is: “What has God called me to do?”

We often think of calling as a single moment of clarity and a divine announcement where everything suddenly makes sense. But Scripture shows us that calling is often something God reveals and refines over time.

The word honing comes to my mind. Just like a craftsman sharpens a blade, not by changing what it is, but by removing what keeps it from fulfilling its purpose, God does the same work in us.

Through various seasons of waiting, disappointment, success, failure, relationships, and even suffering, God shapes our understanding of who He created us to be and how He desires to use us.

Your calling is not simply a job title, a platform, or a position. No, my friend, it’s much bigger than that. Your calling, like mine, is the faithful stewardship of the gifts, experiences, passions, and opportunities God has entrusted to you.

Pay attention to the order: God creates, God prepares, and we walk.

Our role is not to manufacture a calling, but to faithfully follow the One who calls.

Sometimes God clarifies our purpose by opening doors. Sometimes He does it by closing them. Sometimes the Lord uses a season we would never have chosen so that He can develop the character we need for what comes next.

The question is not always, “What is my one great calling?”

Maybe a better question is:

Lord, how are You shaping me, and how can I faithfully serve You in this season?”

Our calling is not just about where we are going. It is about who we are becoming as we walk with Christ.

And as we grow closer to Jesus, our understanding of His purpose for our lives becomes sharper, clearer, and more aligned with His Kingdom.

Until my next post…

Be salty, stay lit.
