Friday Fitness | Keeping It Simple

In my addiction recovery, one of the most valuable lessons I learned was the power of keeping it simple. Life often feels overwhelming. I had to learn to stop spinning in the “what ifs” and instead focus on the next right thing. One step at a time became the only way forward.

Now, as I walk through the shadows of complicated bereavement and the layers of PTSD, I’m reminded once again of that same truth: keep it simple. Not because the grief or trauma are small; they are anything but. I’ve discovered that God’s grace often meets us in the ordinary, in the very present moment, and in what is right in front of us.

Matthew‬ ‭6‬:‭34‬ ‭ESV‬‬

Therefore do not be anxious about tomorrow, for tomorrow will be anxious for itself. Sufficient for the day is its own trouble.

Matthew’s verse doesn’t try to deny the weight of tomorrow. It simply redirects our focus to today. Jesus calls us to trust Him with what’s ahead while leaning into His presence now.

For me, that looks like doing the next simple thing: make the call, take the walk, sit quietly, rest, write, pray. It may not feel like much, but little by little, God builds strength and restores hope.

So today, I’m holding on to this truth: keep it simple. Do what’s in front of me. Trust God with the rest.

Until my next post…

Be salty, stay lit.

  1. Thanks for reading and sharing your thoughts on this post, David. We get so focused on other things we miss out on today and worry about this and that instead of doing what’s right in front of us. It’s what the Lord has provided. At least that’s how it oftentimes works out for me. Doing better. Blessings 🙏

  2. “Do what is in front of me and trust God with the rest.” I love it, brother!
This reminds me of what Jesus said to Martha, when she was preparing for a house full of dinner guests: “Martha, you are troubled about many things, but she (Martha) has chosen the better part, and it will not be taken away from her.”
