Saturday in the Word | A Faith That Cannot Be Silenced

Family, welcome to another edition of Saturday in the Word, as we continue our journey in Acts. A while back, we began our Simple Bible Reading Plan to get a foundational overview of the Word of God.

The Acts of the Apostles (the book’s full title), is believed to be authored by Luke, the physician and follower of Jesus who also wrote the Gospel of Luke.

In Acts 26, we find the Apostle Paul in trouble, not surprisingly, since following Jesus seemed to frequently land Paul in hot water.

Paul, in chains, stands before King Agrippa, accused, imprisoned, ridiculed, and misunderstood. When he is given the opportunity to speak, Paul does not focus on his suffering or defend his reputation. He does not complain about his circumstances.

Instead, he tells his story.

Therefore, O King Agrippa, I was not disobedient to the heavenly vision.

Acts 26:19 ESV

Friends, Acts 26 contains one of the most powerful testimonies in all of Scripture. Paul recounts his life before Christ, his dramatic encounter with Jesus on the road to Damascus, and the calling God placed upon him. To me, what is striking isn’t merely the details of Paul shares about his conversion, but the unwavering conviction with which he speaks. He lays out a model for sharing our own testimonies.

Paul knows exactly who he was and he knows exactly what Christ has done. And Paul also knows exactly why he continues to follow Jesus despite the cost.

The Apostle Paul’s testimony reminds us that Christianity is not merely a collection of doctrines or moral principles. At its heart is a living encounter with our risen Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. Paul was transformed because Jesus met him in the middle of his rebellion and redirected the course of his life.

Sound familiar?

I’ve encountered many believers who wish they had a more dramatic testimony. However, I’ve found that the power of a testimony is not found in how spectacular the story is. The power lies in what Christ has done in someone’s life. Every one of us who has placed their faith in Jesus has been brought from darkness to light, from death to life, and from separation to reconciliation with God, not because of anything we’ve done, but due to everything God has done for us. That’s pretty doggone spectacular in my book.

The Apostle Paul’s words also challenge us to consider our obedience.

When he says, “I was not disobedient to the heavenly vision,” he reveals the secret of a fruitful Christian life. The question is not whether God calls His people. The question is whether we will respond with obedience.

Obedience often leads us down unexpected roads. For Paul, it led to hardship, persecution, imprisonment, and difficulties, but he never viewed these things as evidence that God had abandoned him. Rather, they became opportunities to bear witness to Christ before governors, kings, and eventually Caesar himself.

Even Agrippa cannot dismiss Paul’s message. After hearing him, he famously remarks, “In a short time would you persuade me to be a Christian?” (Acts 26:28).

Paul’s response reveals the heart of an evangelist.

“Whether short or long, I would to God that not only you but also all who hear me this day might become such as I am—except for these chains.” (Acts 26:29)

Paul’s deepest desire was not personal freedom but the salvation of those around him.

What a challenge for us.

How often do we become consumed with our own comfort, our own problems, and our own plans? Paul reminds us that our lives are meant to point beyond ourselves. Every circumstance is an opportunity to testify to God’s grace.

The same Jesus who transformed Paul is still transforming lives today. The same Gospel Paul proclaimed is still the Gospel that reconciles people to God today. And the same call that Paul had remains before us: to faithfully obey the heavenly vision God has given us.

Reflection

  • How has Christ transformed your life?
  • Are there areas where God is calling you to greater obedience?
  • Do the people around you know your story of God’s grace?
  • Would your neighbors be surprised to learn you are a Christian?

Prayer

Lord Jesus, thank You for pursuing me when I was far from You. Give me the courage to share what You have done in my life. Help me to obey Your calling faithfully, even when obedience is costly. May my life point others to You, and may I never lose sight of the gospel that has changed everything. In Jesus’ Name. Amen.

Until my next post

Be salty, stay lit.

  1. Excellent post Rainer. We all who have believed and accepted Jesus have a testimony of transformation. Jesus in us the King of Glory by the power of the Holy Spirit has transformed me by His love and grace. The living Word shapes my thoughts and actions each day.
