Saturday in the Word | Hard Things Jesus Said

There are words of Jesus Christ that feel almost impossible to soften.

This is one of them:

“Do not think that I have come to bring peace to the earth. I have not come to bring peace, but a sword.”

Matthew‬ ‭10‬:‭34‬ ‭ESV‬‬

It sounds jarring, especially coming from the One we call Prince of Peace. We prefer the Jesus who calms storms, blesses children, and speaks peace to anxious hearts. We prefer the Jesus who embodies love. But here, in this passage, Jesus speaks in a way that is unsettling to the portrait we like to paint of Him.

Maybe, that’s exactly the point.

Not violence, but division

I don’t believe Jesus is endorsing violence. I think He is simply describing reality. What was true then, remains true today.

The message of the Kingdom does not simply add comfort to our lives. It shakes them up and reorders them. It draws clear lines that were not visible before and it forces us to face decisions that cannot be avoided.

When truth meets life head on ,it separates what is aligned with God from what is not. It doesn’t do this always gently. It doesn’t always do it cleanly.

Sometimes truth divides loyalty from convenience, conviction from comfort, authenticity from performance, and real faith from cultural religion.

    The sword of clarity

There is a kind of sword that reveals when it cuts.

Experience has taught me that the Word of God often works internally long before it ever affects anything externally. It exposes our motives. It clarifies our allegiance. Scripture brings hidden things into the light where they can no longer quietly rule us with the precision of a surgeon’s blade removing the cancerous tumor of unbelief.

Jesus cuts to the heart of the matter for our benefit. He does it for our healing.

    Why peace still matters

Jesus does not cancel peace. It deepens our understanding of it. The peace of Christ is not the absence of conflict; it is the presence of order. And order often begins with disruption.

Some peace we cling to is not peace at all. It is avoidance, suppression, or compromise of what is true.

    A word for today

There may be areas in our life where tension is not a sign of failure, but a sign of formation. It’s where clarity is being born through discomfort and truth is separating what cannot remain joined. It’s the place whereGod is doing a deeper work.

    Not all conflict is destructive.
    Some division is deliverance.

We aren’t called to hide God’s truth. We are called to be ambassadors of it.

    Be salty, stay lit.

    2. It’s always adjustment time when “truth meets life head on.” I’ve handled it better at some times than others. Thankfully, God has never let me go, even when I’ve felt like moving to a deserted island. 🏝️ God is good—all the time!
