Given that we will spend the next six weeks in Acts, I want to include a brief overview of this pivotal Bible book.
The Acts of the Apostles
The Book of Acts, often referred to simply as Acts, is the fifth book of the New Testament. It is a continuation of the Gospel of Luke and provides a narrative of the early Church’s formation and expansion after the ascension of Jesus Christ.
Acts 9
Acts 9 is a crucial chapter in the New Testament detailing the dramatic conversion of Saul of Tarsus, who later becomes known as the Apostle Paul. Let’s take a look.
Saul’s Journey to Damascus (Acts 9:1-2)
The chapter opens by portraying Saul as a fervent persecutor of Christians. He has been granted authority by the chief priests to arrest followers of Jesus in Damascus. This sets the stage for the profound transformation that is about to unfold.
The Encounter with Jesus (Acts 9:3-9)
As Saul approaches Damascus, a radiant light from heaven envelops him. He collapses to the ground and hears the voice of Jesus, asking, “Saul, Saul, why do you persecute me?” This encounter leaves Saul blind for three days, signifying the commencement of his spiritual transformation.
God’s Preparation through Ananias (Acts 9:10-16)
In Damascus, God speaks to a disciple named Ananias, instructing him to go to Saul. Ananias is hesitant, knowing Saul’s reputation as a persecutor, but God reassures him, explaining that Saul has been chosen as a vessel to spread His name to the Gentiles, kings, and the Israelites.
Saul’s Healing and Baptism (Acts 9:17-19)
Ananias obeys and lays hands on Saul, restoring his sight. Saul is then baptized, filled with the Holy Spirit, and starts to eat, regaining his strength. This marks his commitment to following Christ.
Saul Begins to Preach (Acts 9:20-22)
Immediately after his conversion, Saul starts preaching in the synagogues that Jesus is the Son of God.
His transformation astounds the Jewish community, as they find it hard to believe that the man who once persecuted them is now openly proclaiming the faith.
Challenges Faced by Saul (Acts 9:23-25)
As Saul’s preaching gains momentum, the Jews conspire to kill him. However, his disciples help him escape by lowering him in a basket through an opening in the city wall.
Saul in Jerusalem (Acts 9:26-30)
Saul arrives in Jerusalem, wanting to join the disciples, but they are afraid of him, unsure of his true intentions. Barnabas, however, stands up for him, recounting Saul’s conversion experience and his bold preaching in Damascus. The disciples accept him, and he once again begins to preach boldly.
The Church Grows (Acts 9:31)
The chapter concludes with a brief note on the state of the church across Judea, Galilee, and Samaria. It describes a time of peace, encouragement in the Holy Spirit, and growth in numbers.
Throughout Acts 9, we see themes of transformation, grace, and the power of God to change hearts. Saul’s story reminds us that no one is beyond the reach of God’s love and mercy. His journey from persecutor to apostle illustrates the profound changes that can occur through faith in Jesus Christ.
Are you seeking to grow in your faith?Consider how God can transform your own life and help you regain your confidence and identity in Him. As 2 Corinthians 5:17 declares, “Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, the new creation has come: The old has gone, the new is here!”

Be salty, stay lit.
