The Courage to Surrender

Surrender is one of the hardest words in the Christian life, especially in our current culture. When it comes to difficult theological concepts, surrender ranks right up there with submission. Our human pride doesn’t care much for either word.

Sure, we like the idea of trusting God. However, surrender means releasing control. It means admitting that God’s wisdom is greater than ours.

Jesus prayed in the garden.

And he withdrew from them about a stone’s throw, and knelt down and prayed, saying, “Father, if you are willing, remove this cup from me. Nevertheless, not my will, but yours, be done.”

Those words were not spoken from comfort, but in anguish.

Friend, let me reassure you: surrender is not giving up. Rather, it is placing ourselves into the hands of God who is faithful.

The things we hold onto tightly often become the things that hold us captive. What we place in God’s hands can be transformed.

What am I still trying to control? What would it look like to trust God with it?
