Paying Attention to the Nudge

Recently, I dropped a comment on a post written by my blogger friend Bridget A. Thomas that landed with several people and also gave me some food for thought.

In response to her post Making Space for God, I commented “It’s better to pay attention to the nudge than wait for the kick.”

Experience has led me to believe that paying attention to God—His presence, His voice, and His activity in and around our lives—is itself a spiritual discipline. Like prayer, reading Scripture, and worship, attentiveness is a practice that followers of Jesus should intentionally cultivate. As you and I learn to notice where God is at work, we also become better equipped to recognize His guidance and respond to His gentle nudges with faith and obedience.

And your ears shall hear a word behind you, saying, “This is the way, walk in it,” when you turn to the right or when you turn to the left.

Most of us wish God would make His will unmistakably obvious.

We wait for the burning bush, the dramatic interruption, or the life-altering crisis that leaves no room for doubt. But more often than not, God leads with a nudge instead of a push.

Our innermost being senses a quiet conviction or entertains a persistent thought. There’s a name that won’t leave our mind or an opportunity that keeps resurfacing. We sense a gentle prompting to apologize, encourage, pray, serve, or simply be still.

The challenge for us spiritually is that nudges are easy to ignore. They invite us rather than demanding our attention.

When we repeatedly dismiss God’s leading, we shouldn’t be surprised if He eventually allows circumstances to become louder and more difficult to ignore. The Lord gets our attention. Since we refused the nudge, we get the kick.

The good news is that our Shepherd delights in leading His sheep. Jesus said, “My sheep hear My voice, and I know them, and they follow Me” (John 10:27). Learning to recognize His voice is less about extraordinary experiences and more about cultivating an attentive heart through Scripture, prayer, and faithful obedience in the ordinary moments of life.

Today, I encourage you not to wait for a crisis to seek God’s direction.

Pay attention to the nudge.

It may be a conversation you’ve been avoiding or a person who needs your encouragement. Maybe you have a habit that needs changing. Perhaps there’s a door God is opening or one He is closing.

Faithfulness often begins with responding to the quiet whisper before it becomes a loud wake-up call.

Pay attention to the nudge before it becomes a kick in the pants.

Prayer

Father, slow my hurried heart so I can recognize Your gentle leading. Give me ears to hear, eyes to see, and courage to obey the quiet promptings of Your Spirit. Help me not to wait for painful lessons when You are already speaking in grace. Teach me to walk closely with You today, one faithful step at a time. In the name of Jesus. Amen.
