There are hymns that we sing that echo through the generations.

Victory in Jesus is one of those hymns.

Written in 1939 by Eugene M. Bartlett while his own health was failing, it wasn’t born from comfort or success. It was born from faith. Bartlett had suffered a debilitating stroke, yet instead of writing about defeat, he wrote about the One who had already won the greatest victory.

O victory in Jesus, my Savior, forever!
He sought me and bought me
With His redeeming blood.

Notice what the hymn doesn’t say.

It doesn’t say, I found Him. It says, He sought me.

It doesn’t say, I earned salvation. It says, He bought me.

The victory we celebrate isn’t our achievement. It’s Christ’s.

While the news headlines may be discouraging and our schedules are full, hymns and worship songs like Victory in Jesus help us remember to keep the main thing the main thing. Worship anchors our confidence in Jesus Christ rather than in our circumstances.

The Cross looked like defeat, however the empty tomb declared victory.

And because Christ lives, we face this day with hope, not because life is easy, but because our Savior is alive.

If your week is difficult, don’t wait until Sunday to worship.

Lift your eyes today. Sing, even if your voice is weak. Pray, even if your words are few. Remember, even if your heart feels weary.

Our victory is not found in winning every battle. Our victory is found in belonging to the One who has already won the war.

But thanks be to God, who gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.
