Saturday in the Word | The Gospel Arrives in Rome (Acts 28)

Today, our Simple Bible Reading Plan brings us to the final chapter of Acts. It’s fitting that Luke doesn’t end with a dramatic conclusion. Instead, he ends with an open door.

The Apostle Paul has survived storms, imprisonment, false accusations, shipwreck, and even a venomous snake bite. Through it all, one truth has remained constant:

God keeps His promises.

After wintering on Malta, Paul finally arrives in Rome, the destination God had revealed to him long before now (Acts 23:11). Though he enters the city as a prisoner, he also enters as a missionary. Chains may have limited Paul’s freedom, but they could not limit the advance of the Gospel.

One of my favorite verses in the chapter comes at the very end:

proclaiming the kingdom of God and teaching about the Lord Jesus Christ with all boldness and without hindrance.

Those final words, without hindrance, are remarkable.

Rome was the center of political power. Paul was under guard. His future was uncertain. Yet Luke wants us to see that nothing can stop what God has begun. Empires rise and fall. Circumstances change. God’s mission continues.

If God starts it, He finishes it.

Acts doesn’t really have an ending because the story of the Church didn’t end there. The same Holy Spirit who empowered the apostles still empowers us today. We are simply living in the next chapter of the story.

As we conclude this journey through Acts, I’ve been reminded again that following Jesus doesn’t guarantee smooth sailing. Paul experienced opposition at nearly every turn. Yet every obstacle became another opportunity for God to display His faithfulness. And I think that’s pretty cool!

Maybe that’s the invitation for us today.

Let’s not measure God’s work solely by our circumstances. Measure it by His faithfulness.

We may feel confined by our situation, uncertain about our future, or waiting for God to move—remember the Apostle Paul in Rome. Even in chains, Paul faithfully shared Christ with whoever came to his door.

In God’s Kingdom, faithfulness is never wasted.
