You Cannot Fix the Past

You cannot fix the past.

You cannot rewrite yesterday’s conversation, undo that decision, reclaim the missed opportunity, or erase the words that should never have been spoken. No amount of regret changes history.

There are no reparations that make injustice equal. No payment can restore a lost childhood. No apology can bring back a life. No verdict can fully heal a wounded soul. We should pursue justice wherever possible, but justice cannot reverse what has already been done.

The same is true in our own lives. We cannot compensate for every failure, balance every wrong, or somehow earn our way back to a clean conscience.

However, regret isn’t always wasted.

Sometimes it becomes the teacher that wisdom never could have been without pain. Sometimes failure becomes the soil where humility grows. Sometimes the deepest wounds become reminders that we desperately need God’s grace.

The enemy wants us staring backward, chained to what cannot be changed. Christ continually calls us forward.

The apostle Paul knew what it meant to have a past. He had persecuted the church before becoming one of its greatest advocates. Yet he wrote:

Brothers, I do not consider that I have made it my own. But one thing I do: forgetting what lies behind and straining forward to what lies ahead,  I press on toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus.

Philippians 3:13-14 ESV

Paul wasn’t pretending his past never happened. He simply refused to let it define his future.

Repent where repentance is needed. Make amends where reconciliation is possible. Seek justice where justice can still be done. Ask forgiveness where forgiveness is needed. But don’t confuse those necessary acts with the belief that the past itself can somehow be undone.

Only God redeems the irredeemable.

The Cross is God’s declaration that your past is not the final word. Jesus doesn’t merely forgive sinners; He makes them new. He does not erase history; He redeems it, weaving even our failures into His greater story of grace.

You cannot fix the past.

But by God’s grace, you can faithfully live today so today’s obedience has a remarkable way of shaping tomorrow.
