Bible Study Sunday | Listen to God

Matthew 17 begins on a mountaintop.

Jesus takes Peter, James, and John up a high mountain where, before their eyes, He is transfigured. His face shines like the sun, His clothes become dazzling white, and Moses and Elijah appear, speaking with Him.

For a brief moment, the disciples catch a glimpse of Jesus’ divine glory.

Peter, overwhelmed by the experience, wants to stay there. He suggests building three shelters—one for Jesus, one for Moses, and one for Elijah. But before he can finish speaking, a bright cloud overshadows them, and the voice of the Father declares:

He was still speaking when, behold, a bright cloud overshadowed them, and a voice from the cloud said, “This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased; listen to him.”

Listen to Him is the heart of this chapter. We live in a world filled with competing voices. News feeds. Podcasts. Social media. Friends. Critics. Each of these things compete for our attention. Even our own fears and desires.

The Father points us to the One voice that matters most.

Listen to Jesus.

As the chapter unfolds, Jesus comes down from the mountain and immediately enters the brokenness of everyday life. He heals a boy tormented by an evil spirit, teaches His disciples about faith, predicts His death and resurrection once again, and humbly pays the temple tax.

Glory on the mountain is followed by ministry in the valley.

That is often how God works in our lives. Moments of spiritual clarity are not meant to be permanent retreats from the world. They prepare us to faithfully serve in the ordinary places where people are hurting and hope is needed. All over the world, people are impacted by war, famine, disaster, and disease. Jesus invites us to be faithful servants to those in need, giving witness to the grace and mercy He has shown us.

Like us, the disciples needed both the vision of Christ’s glory and the reality of His coming cross.

Following Jesus means trusting Him on the mountain and in the valley. It means listening when His words challenge us, comfort us, and call us to deeper faith, not just when they tickle our fancy.

The Christian life is not sustained by extraordinary experiences alone. It is sustained by continually listening to the voice of the Savior.

• What voices compete for your attention each day?
• Are you making space to listen to Jesus through Scripture and prayer?
• How can what God shows you in moments of worship shape how you live in the ordinary moments of tomorrow?

Prayer

Lord Jesus, thank You for revealing Your glory to Your disciples and reminding us that You are the beloved Son of God. Help us to listen to Your voice above every other voice that competes for our attention. Whether we find ourselves on a mountaintop or in a valley, teach us to trust You, follow You, and reflect Your love to those around us. In Your precious and holy name we do pray. Amen.

May we spend time in God’s Word today, not merely to gain information about Jesus, but to hear His voice—and then faithfully follow wherever He leads.
