What Jesus Can Teach Us About Being Personable

Recently, someone told me that I am highly personable.

While I love words of affirmation, I struggle with receiving compliments. This one got me thinking.

What does it actually mean to be personable?

We often equate being personable with someone who is outgoing, funny, charming, or just good at talking to people.

When I look at Jesus, I see something deeper.

Jesus was personable because Jesus saw people.

He noticed the people others overlooked. Jesus stopped for the blind man everyone passed by. He talked with the Samaritan woman no one else dared to speak to. He welcomed children. Jesus ate with tax collectors and sinners. He touched lepers. He wept with grieving friends. Jesus asked questions and He listened.

Jesus didn’t treat people like interruptions to His ministry.

People were His ministry.

And maybe that’s something worth remembering in a world where we’re increasingly distracted by our phones, our schedules, our opinions, and our own little bubbles.

Being personable isn’t necessarily about being the most interesting person in the room.

It’s about being interested in the people in the room.

Jesus had places to go and things to do. But, He took time to notice people and be present for them.
