Extraterrestrial Life | Yes or No?

I’ve written before about debates like music or sports?

That one is easy for me. Music. Every time. And I love sports. Just not like I love music.

But here’s another question:

Extraterrestrial life. Yes or no?

I don’t mean little green men landing in somebody’s backyard. Ive heard they are really gray or maybe blue. But, if that happens, I’d like to be notified. What I’m really talking about is the possibility that somewhere in this enormous universe, life exists beyond Earth.

I’ve actually wondered about this for a long time. During one of my college stints, I took a class on the subject.

Recently, one Saturday evening, my mom and I were sitting on her patio after sunset when we saw something in the sky. It hovered along the tree line, red and green lights flashing in and off. It made some nifty moves in the night sky.

We watched it for a while, trying to figure out what we were seeing. Was it an airplane? A satellite? Something atmospheric? Or was it something else?

We couldn’t identify it.

The obvious answer these days would be a drone. But, this thing was big. Bigger than any drones I’ve seen. And it moved fast. Faster than I’m accustomed to things moving in the sky. It jetted from east to west in a flash of a second, emitting a bright white light from its belly onto what seemed like our pasture.

We still don’t really know.

Sometimes, I think we are a little too quick to assume that curiosity is somehow a threat to faith. Especially Christians.

I’m not sure I see it that way.

The universe is enormous. Creation is humongous. Beyond our imagination.

And the God who created it is certainly bigger than my understanding of it.

Now to him who is able to do above and beyond all that we ask or think according to the power that works in us— to him be glory in the church and in Christ Jesus to all generations, forever and ever. Amen.

Ephesians 3:20-21 CSB

If we eventually discover that Earth is the only place where life exists, I’ll still marvel at what God has made. However, should we discover life somewhere else, it won’t shake my faith in who God is.

I will have a thousand questions.

Wonder doesn’t need to compete with faith. Wonder can lead us toward worship.

The Bible begins with, “In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth.”

Notice that it doesn’t say the heavens are small. They are vast. Beautiful. Mysterious. And filled with things we still don’t understand.

Maybe there is life somewhere out there. Maybe there isn’t.

I’m not going to pretend I know. I understand enough about God to realize I can’t put limits on Him.

I am willing to keep looking up.

After all, sometimes looking up is exactly where wonder begins.

So what do you think?

Extraterrestrial life: yes or no?

Be salty, stay lit.
