Saturday in the Word | Philippians 2

Well, here we are, closing out Round Two of our Simple Bible Reading Plan.

And we’re ending with Philippians 2, which feels like a pretty appropriate place to land.

Because Philippians 2 gets right to the heart of what it means to follow Jesus.

Humility. Service. Obedience. Unity.

You know—all those things that sound really good until somebody cuts you off in traffic.

Paul writes:

Do nothing from selfish ambition or conceit, but in humility count others more significant than yourselves.

Philippians‬ ‭2‬:‭3‬ ‭ESV‬‬

That’s one of those verses that sounds simple until we actually try living it. Our natural tendency is often to make life about ourselves.

And then Jesus comes along and says, How about serving?

As always, Paul points us directly to Jesus, who willingly humbled Himself and took the form of a servant.

He is the example.

Jesus didn’t cling to status. He didn’t demand recognition. He didn’t use His position to elevate Himself.

He humbled Himself and served.

And if we’re going to call ourselves followers of Jesus, that ought to show up in how we treat people.

  • At home.
  • At work.
  • At church.
  • Online.

Especially when we’re dealing with people who don’t make it particularly easy.

Philippians 2 also contains one of my favorite images:

“Shine among them like stars in the sky.”

I love that.

We don’t have to be the biggest light in the room or have to have the largest platform. We don’t have to go viral. We don’t have to have everything figured out.

We just need to shine where God has placed us.

A little light can go a long way in a dark room.

As we become more like Jesus His light becomes increasingly more visible through our lives.

The goal of reading Scripture isn’t simply to get through another reading plan.

It’s to let Scripture shine through us.

Keep walking with Jesus.

Be salty, stay lit.
