Bible Study Sunday | Matthew 24

Jesus, the Last Days, and Staying Awake

Matthew 24 is one of those chapters that makes Christians look at the headlines a little differently.

Wars. Rumors of wars. Earthquakes. Persecution. False prophets. People falling away. The Gospel being proclaimed throughout the world.

And then Jesus starts talking about His return.

Yeah. This is one of those chapters.

I’ve had quite a few conversations lately with people who believe we are living in the Last Days. Some believe Jesus is coming back very soon, perhaps even within their lifetime.

Matthew 24 certainly gives us plenty to think about. But Jesus didn’t give us this chapter so we could become obsessed with predicting the date of His return. He gave it to us so we would be ready.

“See That No One Leads You Astray”

Jesus begins with a warning:

And Jesus answered them, “See that no one leads you astray.”

Matthew‬ ‭24‬:‭4‬ ‭ESV‬‬

That warning matters.

There are people who claim to speak for God and others who claim to know exactly what is happening. Some folks confidently connect earthquakes, wars, political events, natural disasters, and cultural changes to biblical prophecy.

Some are even sincere.

However, sincerity doesn’t make someone right.

Jesus tells His followers to be discerning. I think that’s good advice for any generation.

Trouble Is Not the Same as the End

Jesus talks about wars, famines, earthquakes, persecution, betrayal, hatred, false prophets, and lawlessness. Those things are frightening, but notice what Jesus says:

“And you will hear of wars and rumors of wars. See that you are not alarmed, for this must take place, but the end is not yet.

Matthew‬ ‭24‬:‭6‬ ‭ESV‬‬

The presence of trouble doesn’t automatically mean the end has arrived.

Human beings have always lived through terrible things. Every generation has experienced moments when people thought, surely, this must be it.

And yet here we are.

That doesn’t mean Jesus isn’t coming back. It means we should be careful about turning current events into a prophetic countdown clock, as if we know the answer. We don’t.

Nobody Knows

Eventually Jesus says something remarkably clear:

“But concerning that day and hour no one knows, not even the angels of heaven, nor the Son, but the Father only.”

Matthew‬ ‭24‬:‭36‬ ‭ESV‬‬

No one.

Not the disciples. Not pastors. Not theologians. Not prophecy experts. Not the person on YouTube who has created an impressive-looking chart connecting Daniel, Revelation, world politics, and the price of gasoline.

Nobody knows.

Jesus says even the angels don’t know.

So perhaps our energy would be better spent preparing our hearts than trying to calculate God’s calendar.

Stay Awake

One of the strongest themes in this chapter is watchfulness.

Jesus repeatedly tells His followers to stay awake. Not because we should live in panic, but because we should live with our spiritual eyes open.

That means paying attention to God, refusing to let fear become our master, continuing to love people when the world becomes difficult, and remaining faithful when we’re tired. It means continuing to tell the story of Jesus and living today in such a way that we don’t have to be afraid of tomorrow.

The Question Matthew 24 Asks Me

I’ve been thinking about the Last Days lately. Maybe the better question is:

“If Jesus returned today, would I be found living faithfully?”

That’s a much more personal question, and it’s one I can actually do something about.

I can’t control when Jesus returns or predict what tomorrow’s headlines will say. I can’t make the world behave. But I can love God, love my neighbor, forgive, serve, and share the Gospel today.

I can choose faith over fear and keep my eyes on Jesus.

Matthew 24 isn’t ultimately a chapter about figuring out the future. It’s about how we live while we wait.

So whether Jesus returns tomorrow, next year, or generations from now, the assignment remains the same: stay awake, stay faithful, keep loving, keep serving, and keep looking for Jesus.

We’re not called to know the hour.

We’re called to be ready.

Until my next post…

Be salty, stay lit.
