The Wisdom Letter | Faith Without Works

James 2:14–25 (ESV)

Can faith save you if it doesn’t change the way you live?

James gets right to the heart of a question every Christian should consider: Is our faith evident in the way we live?

It’s one thing to say we believe in Jesus. It’s another thing to put that faith into action.

James gives us a practical example. If we encounter someone who lacks food or clothing, offering kind words without meeting their needs falls short. Our faith should move us beyond words and into action.

Frankly, I think this is why people roll their eyes when we offer our thoughts and prayers. They don’t see any shoe leather behind our words.

To be clear, James isn’t teaching that we earn salvation through good works. He’s reminding us that genuine faith produces fruit. We aren’t saved by our works, but the faith that saves us won’t leave us unchanged. And it will compel us to act.

Even Abraham demonstrated his faith through his obedience to God. His actions revealed what he believed.

If someone observed your life, would they see evidence of your faith?

Faith isn’t merely something we profess. It’s something we practice. Words without deeds are just words.

Let’s not just talk about following Jesus. Let’s live like we do.

Check out my friend Nathan’s post on how knowing the truth impacts how we live:

A question for reflection

Where is God be calling you to move beyond believing the right things to putting what you believe into practice?

Good works aren’t the root of our salvation; they’re the fruit of a living faith. James challenges us not simply to claim faith, but to let our faith shape how we treat people, respond to God’s Word, and live each day.

Until my next post…

Be salty, stay lit.
