Terri and I voted today.
You and I don’t have to agree on politics to agree that voting matters.

The Founding Fathers understood the importance of giving the people a voice in their government.
The Declaration of Independence declared that governments derive their legitimate power from the consent of the governed. That was a revolutionary idea in 1776, and it remains an important principle today.
The history of voting in America reminds us that the right to vote was not always available to everyone.
When our nation was founded, voting was largely limited to old white guys like me who met state requirements, often including property ownership. Over decades, generations of Americans have fought to expand that right.
In 1870, the 15th Amendment prohibited denying the vote based on race. In 1920, the 19th Amendment prohibited denying the vote based on sex. The Voting Rights Act of 1965 took further steps to combat racial discrimination in voting. And in 1971, the 26th Amendment lowered the voting age to 18.
That history is a reminder that having a voice in our government is something worth exercising and protecting.
You don’t have to agree with me. You don’t have to share my politics. You don’t even have to like my preferred candidates.
But please, go vote.
Our democracy isn’t sustained by the people we elect alone. It’s sustained by the people who participate.
Learn about the candidates and issues. Think critically. Make your own decisions. Then show up and let your voice be heard.
Voting is one way we hold our leaders accountable and help shape the future of our communities and our nation.
Our country belongs to all of us, and participating in its future is a shared responsibility as Americans.
Your voice matters. Make it count.

Until my next post…
Be salty, stay lit.
