Contending for Our Christian Faith

Standing firm in biblical truth while reflecting the love of Jesus.

Contend for the faith that was once for all delivered to the saints.

Jude 1:3 (ESV)

What does it mean to contend for our Christian faith?

It’s a question worth asking, especially in a world where truth is often treated as subjective, biblical convictions are challenged, and Christians sometimes struggle to distinguish between standing firm in their faith and simply winning an argument.

The Bible doesn’t tell us to abandon our convictions when they become unpopular. Neither does it give us permission to treat people poorly because they disagree with us.

Instead, Scripture calls us to something more demanding: faithfulness.

Our Faith Is Worth Contending For

In his brief but powerful letter, Jude urges believers to contend for the faith that was entrusted to God’s people.

The word contend conveys the idea of striving earnestly for something important. Jude wasn’t encouraging Christians to manufacture arguments or pick fights. He was calling them to stand firm in the truth of the Gospel when that truth was threatened by false teaching.

The Christian faith is worth defending because the Gospel matters.

Jesus Christ died for our sins and rose again. Through Him, we receive forgiveness, reconciliation with God, and the hope of eternal life. These aren’t merely comforting ideas or religious traditions. They are the foundation of our faith and the source of our hope.

We shouldn’t be embarrassed by the Gospel, ashamed of our biblical convictions, or reluctant to share the hope we have in Jesus.

But how we contend for our faith matters, too.

Conviction Without Combativeness

It’s easy to confuse being passionate about our beliefs with being argumentative.

We live in a culture where people often talk past one another. Social media rewards outrage. Political disagreements become personal. Conversations that might lead to understanding quickly deteriorate into contests over who can deliver the sharpest response.

Unfortunately, Christians sometimes fall into the same patterns.

We can become so focused on proving someone wrong that we forget to demonstrate the love of Christ. We can defend biblical truth in ways that contradict the very character of the Savior we claim to follow.

Peter offers us a helpful reminder:

Yet do it with gentleness and respect.

1 Peter 3:15 (ESV)

Notice that Peter doesn’t tell us to abandon our convictions. He tells us to communicate them with gentleness and respect.

We can stand firmly on God’s Word without being arrogant. We can disagree without being disagreeable. We can speak honestly without humiliating others.

Our goal isn’t simply to win an argument. It’s to remain faithful to Jesus while making the truth of the Gospel known.

That requires both courage and humility.

Live the Faith We Profess

Contending for our faith involves more than defending our beliefs in conversation.

It also means living them out.

Jesus calls us to love our neighbors, forgive those who wrong us, care for people who are vulnerable, practice generosity, pursue justice, and extend grace to others.

These aren’t optional extras for particularly devoted Christians. They are part of what it means to follow Jesus.

Our lives should reflect the faith we profess.

People may disagree with our understanding of Scripture. They may question our convictions or challenge our beliefs. We cannot control how others respond to the Gospel.

But we can pay attention to how we represent Christ.

Do our words reflect His character? Do our actions demonstrate His love? Does our treatment of others give them a reason to take our faith seriously?

We won’t get everything right. I’m certainly not suggesting that I do.

But by God’s grace, we can continue growing in our ability to reflect Jesus more faithfully.

After all, the world doesn’t simply need Christians who can explain what they believe. It needs Christians who are committed to living what they believe.

Keep Jesus at the Center

Contending for the Christian faith requires discernment.

Not every disagreement is a threat to the Gospel. Not every cultural debate deserves our attention. And not every provocation requires a response.

We need to know what matters most.

Our faith isn’t ultimately about defending our political preferences, protecting our personal reputations, or winning the approval of people who agree with us.

It’s about Jesus Christ.

He is the center of our faith, the source of our salvation, and the One we are called to follow.

When we keep Jesus at the center, we have a better perspective on what deserves our attention and how we should respond when our faith is challenged.

We can speak the truth without losing sight of grace. We can stand firm without surrendering humility. And we can love people without compromising our convictions.

That is what faithful witness looks like.

Stand Firm. Speak Truth. Reflect Jesus.

Contending for our Christian faith isn’t always easy. It may require courage when our beliefs are unpopular, patience when conversations become difficult, and perseverance when standing firm comes at a cost.

But we don’t contend alone.

God has given us His Word to guide us, His Spirit to strengthen us, and the example of Jesus to shape our lives.

Our responsibility is to remain faithful to the Gospel we have received and to share its hope with others.

So let’s know what we believe. Let’s stand firmly on the truth of Scripture. Let’s speak with courage and gentleness. And let’s make sure our lives reflect the Savior whose name we bear.

The world doesn’t need Christians who are merely better at arguing. It needs Christians who are faithful to Jesus.

Let’s contend for the faith, not just with our words, but with our whole lives.

Food for Thought

How can you stand firm in your Christian faith this week while demonstrating the love, humility, and grace of Jesus to someone who sees things differently?

My Prayer

Heavenly Father, thank You for the gift of salvation through Jesus Christ. Strengthen my faith and help me stand firm in the truth of Your Word. Give me the courage to speak when I need to speak, the wisdom to know when to remain silent, and the humility to treat others with love and respect. Keep my heart centered on Jesus. May my words and actions faithfully reflect the Gospel I profess. Help me contend for the faith with conviction, courage, and grace. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Until my next post…

Be salty, stay lit.
