Connecting to God through Worship

Our home church, Trinity Bible Church in Richardson, has a slogan “Connecting People with God and each other.” Over the years, since first joining Trinity and since first devoting my life to Christ a few years prior, I’ve thought a lot about what it means to connect to God. One of the first ways I chose to serve God was through being a member of the worship team. My first go round at this was at our previous church where Terri and I attended for about four years and continued since we began attending TBC a little over five years ago. While the two experiences of serving on the worship team are different, they do share a major similarity. In both cases, as worship musicians, we prayed to connect people to God. That is the point of leading worship; creating a space where believers can commune with the Lord of the Universe, both as a congregation and individually. As a church, we gather on Sunday morning to worship God in unity. While we are worshipping the One Who Created Everything, there is no doubt that there are individual connections with God happening while we lift our voices in one accord, singing songs of praise and reverence to our Lord.

Colossians 3:15-17

Let the peace of Christ keep you in tune with each other, in step with each other. None of this going off and doing your own thing. And cultivate thankfulness. Let the Word of Christ—the Message—have the run of the house. Give it plenty of room in your lives. Instruct and direct one another using good common sense. And sing, sing your hearts out to God! Let every detail in your lives—words, actions, whatever—be done in the name of the Master, Jesus, thanking God the Father every step of the way.

God loves us. Deeply. Madly. So much so that He gave His Son as a living sacrifice to pay the penalty for our sins, a debt we incurred and owed. Our sin separated us from the Lord. But, He took the initiative and through Christ paved a way of reconciliation and redemption. It is through Christ that we are saved, by God’s grace, through faith. It is by the power of the Holy Spirit that we experience God and abundant, eternal life. Because His Spirit resides in us, we commune with God daily. Scripture says that even when we don’t know what to pray, the Holy Spirit is at work in us, praying on our behalf. As believers, we know that God is continually at work in us and working through us.

Worship is our response to the work of God in our lives. As believers, we are in reverent awe of what the Lord is has done, is doing, and will do. Perhaps this week, He answered a prayer of ours or maybe we realized that He blessed us by not answering a prayer in the way we had intended but in a much better way than we could have ever imagined. Maybe, this past week, we’ve just borne witness to God’s goodness in our lives. Or, instead, we found the Lord present in the hour of our greatest need. Whatever the case may be, our response is simple: worship.

In worship, we commune with our Creator, our Savior, our Sustainer. Through worship, we connect with God. I pray that this Sunday, you and those you love will have the opportunity to connect with the Lord in worship. Peace go with you.
