As I shared in yesterday’s post, life is filled with decisions. Often, our choices are clear cut; between a good thing and a bad alternative. Sometimes, we are faced with deciding between two good things, neither wrong in and of itself, but one being more right for that moment in time. On a few occasions, we are faced with choosing between the better of two bad things. You don’t have to do much living to learn that life is rarely, if ever, ideal.

That’s why developing our discernment is so crucial. There are times when you need to make a decision and you are unsure of whether or not its right in the long run but it addresses what you are facing in the present moment. I’ve learned to do what God puts in front of me first. This is not an overnight epiphany but rather something I learned through lots of trial and error. Do what’s in front of you.

Nobody gets to be better at making decisions without first making decisions. Show me someone who has never made a wrong decision and I’ll show you someone who hasn’t made a lot of decisions. Most of us aren’t born with great decision-making prowess. The good news is that with experience we get better at decision-making. Every day is filled with a rich abundance of opportunities to make decisions.

Experience fosters wisdom.

As we get older, we naturally get better at making decisions, even if we usually make the wrong choices. But, eventually, we run into a situation or circumstance that threatens to uproot everything we think we know. It sends us for a loop. For those times, we need an outside source to help us.

For me, I have grown to rely on the wisdom of Scripture. I haven’t always depended on God’s word for insight. But, by the grace of God, I learned. And, I leaned on the truths of Scripture before I actually came to believe in a higher power.

“If any of you lacks wisdom, you should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to you. But when you ask, you must believe and not doubt, because the one who doubts is like a wave of the sea, blown and tossed by the wind.”

It’s hard to make a decision when the stakes are high. Avoiding it altogether may seem a better option than making a choice. But in those circumstances that demand a ‘grown-up’ response, those who trust in God can look to him for guidance. Honestly, it is during those moments that I’ve learned to trust God the most.

Remember, you’re not alone. You can seek the wisdom of counsel and lean on the Lord for guidance. You can do it.

4. What advice would you give someone faced with making a difficult decision?

Prayer:

Lord, we thank You for the ability to make decisions. Thank You for the experience we gain in order to gain the discernment and wisdom necessary to make sound decisions. We are grateful for the wise counsel You provide us through Your word and through trusted friends. May we use Your blessings to bring You praise and Your name glory. Amen.
