Many people are adverse to change. Few people celebrate it. We like the comfort of the known no matter how difficult it might be to stay in the status quo. Change is work. Change is challenging. Change is uncomfortable.
Frankly, until the pain of maintaining the status quo outweighs the weight of any suffering accompanying change than everything will remain the same.
We see it everyday where I work. People comfortable with what should be uncomfortable, yet unwilling to step out and embrace change. You’ve heard it said: “Better the devil you know than the one you don’t.”
Perhaps there is fear involved. Or maybe, maybe—-we’re coveting our comfort, even if there’s a little discomfort involved. As a friend of my often says when faced with doing something he doesn’t really want to do, “Too much trouble.”
Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, the new creation has come: The old has gone, the new is here!
2 Corinthians 5:17
Change calls for hard conversations, especially with oneself. Change requires taking a chance that life might have a different outcome than the one we’re experiencing right now. Change demands faith.
Faith often stems out of desperation. We look to God for help, but only when we are desperate enough to recognize things can’t remain the same.
Nearly 26 years ago, I looked in the mirror and determined something needed to change. As I celebrate my 56th birthday today, I’m grateful that the Lord grabbed me by the hand and lifted me up out of the pit that I found myself living in. I’m glad the Lord saw fit to let me live and give me another opportunity to get it right. I needed it.

Therefore, I urge you, brothers and sisters, in view of God’s mercy, to offer your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God—this is your true and proper worship. Maybe today you’re thinking that you need a change. Let me encourage you to take a step forward in faith and ask God to help you transform your life. No, it won’t be easy. But, you won’t regret it.
