Becoming an American

The other morning, as I was preparing to head to work, an inner voice whispered “go check the mail.” It was my birthday and I was already running a little late. But, as I’ve leaned over the years, it’s important to listen to those whispers from within. Our souls have a way of speaking to us, as does the Holy Spirit.

So, I decided to drive to our Post Office. My anticipation grew as I opened our postal box. I would not be disappointed. Laying on top of a small stash of mail was an envelope from United States Citizen and Immigration Service (USCIS).

My heart leapt with excitement. A smile flashed across my face. I nervously opened the envelope using a key for a letter opener.

I pulled out the paper inside and unfolded it. My eyes quickly scoured the announcement. YES!!! I had received the notification confirming my swearing in ceremony to become an American citizen.

My journey to becoming an American citizen has taken decades —5 to be exact—from the time my parents an I boarded a plane in Zurich to fly across the ocean. There are a multitude of reasons why—but as the USCIS agent who conducted my interview said “It simply takes the time it takes and that time is different for every individual.” This is certainly true in my case.

“Oh, taste and see that the Lord is good! Blessed is the man who takes refuge in him!”

Psalm 34:8 (ESV)

On Tuesday, August 2nd, I will proudly take the oath to officially become an American. I couldn’t be more excited. It’s been a long time coming.

God bless America.

May the Lord bless you and shine His favor on you today!
