The Gospel, One Word at a Time | Sanctification

If grace is where our story with God begins, sanctification is how that story unfolds. Grace forgives. Sanctification forms. Grace covers. Sanctification reveals and heals.

Grace says, “You are mine.”
Sanctification says, “Now let me make you whole.”

Sanctification is not a word we use often, yet we encounter it every day.

It’s found not that tension we carry
between who we were and who we are becoming. It’s the quiet awareness
that something in us is changing, even if we can’t fully explain it.

If grace is where the Gospel meets us,
sanctification is where it begins to reshape us.

Set Apart

At its core, sanctification means to be set apart.

Not set apart in a way that removes us from the world, but in a way that redefines how we live within it.

It is God’s will that you should be sanctified: that you should avoid sexual immorality; that each of you should learn to control your own body in a way that is holy and honorable, not in passionate lust like the pagans, who do not know God; and that in this matter no one should wrong or take advantage of a brother or sister. The Lord will punish all those who commit such sins, as we told you and warned you before. For God did not call us to be impure, but to live a holy life. Therefore, anyone who rejects this instruction does not reject a human being but God, the very God who gives you his Holy Spirit.

1 Thessalonians‬ ‭4‬:‭3‬-‭8‬ ‭NIV‬‬

We still go to work. We still provide for our families. We still navigate relationships. We still wrestle with thoughts, fears, and desires.

But something is different now.

We belong to God.

And that changes everything.

Already…and Still Becoming

Sanctification carries a tension we don’t always talk about:

Through Christ, we are already made holy and we are still being made holy.

And that is what some of you were. But you were washed, you were sanctified, you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and by the Spirit of our God.

1 Corinthians‬ ‭6‬:‭11‬ ‭NIV‬‬

We often celebrate what God has done for us, but grow uncomfortable with what He is doing in us at the moment.

One feels like an immediate gift whereas the other feels like a long process.

The Process We Don’t Control

Sanctification is not behavior modification. It’s transformation.

And we all, who with unveiled faces contemplate the Lord’s glory, are being transformed into his image with ever-increasing glory, which comes from the Lord, who is the Spirit.

2 Corinthians‬ ‭3‬:‭18‬ ‭NIV‬‬

This is slow work that involves peeling the layers, like an onion, as we grow more Christlike moment by moment, choice after choice. God is not just adjusting what we do. He is remolding who we are.

And honestly, that doesn’t always feel good or come easy. Transformation often feels like loss before it feels like life. But, take heart. Sanctification isn’t about being impressive. It’s about being faithful, available, and teachable.

God isn’t looking for perfection. He‘s inviting us to participate.

Therefore, my dear friends, as you have always obeyed—not only in my presence, but now much more in my absence—continue to work out your salvation with fear and trembling, for it is God who works in you to will and to act in order to fulfill his good purpose.

Philippians‬ ‭2‬:‭12‬-‭13‬ ‭NIV‬‬

Sanctification is not rushed.

God is not finished with you.

Reflection

Where do you sense the tension of sanctification in your life right now? What might it look like to surrender to it rather than trying keep escaping it?

Be salty, stay lit.
