My Fred Sanford Moment

Recently, while visiting my mom in East Texas, she and I watched several old Sanford & Son reruns on TV. As we laughed, mom reminded me how much my dad loved the show and how funny Redd Foxx was in that show. I fondly remember watching Sanford & Son with dad when I was a kid.

A cheerful heart is good medicine, but a broken spirit saps a person’s strength.

A few Saturdays ago, Terri and I drove two plus hours to Stephenville to watch our niece graduate with her Masters degree. On our way back, traffic was super heavy, probably due to the beautiful weather inspiring people to get out and about. We still needed to pick up fixings for Sunday breakfast as well as flowers for Mother’s Day. Terri and I planned to place some flowers at the gravesites of her sister as well as our other niece.

After we left the store and got home, we realized that we didn’t really have a safe place to store the flowers away from our cat crew. Not to mention, we didn’t have any vases handy. So in a moment of Fred Sanford ingenuity, I placed the three flower bouquets in the master bath toilet and shut the door.

When Terri saw what I had done, she laughed, and then complimented me on my cleverness.

As the old folk proverb says, “Necessity is the mother of invention.” Perhaps, it’s desperation that fuels ingenuity, more than necessity. Potato, potahto.

I think Fred Sanford would have flashed a great, big smile. Maybe, my dad would have, too.

Until next time…

Be salty, stay lit.
