Your Work Is an Opportunity

We often think of ministry as something that happens at church

But what if ministry also happens at our desk or in the break room?

Truth is, ministry can happen during a conversation on the phone or in a divinely timed meeting. It happens in the way we treat the person who is simply having a bad day.

I prayed with a pastor on the phone last week and after I prayed for him, he shared how my action ministered to him and struck a chord with him. He was particularly touched by my using the word shepherd as I prayed for him.

Jesus said:

You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden.

Matthew 5:14 ESV

Notice He didn’t say, “You are the light of the church.”

The world.

That means wherever we go, we carry an opportunity to reflect Christ.

Our job may be our paycheck, but it can also be our platform. Our workplace can be where we live out our faith.

Friend, we don’t have to preach a sermon every time we walk through the door. Sometimes the most powerful witness is just being the person who is dependable, encouraging, patient, honest and kind.

Be the person people wonder about and maybe ask “What’s different about you?”

Encourage people with your presence. That’s ministry, too.

Today is this beautiful lady’s birthday! I’m so blessed to be able to call her my wife and do life with her.

Happy birthday Terri!!!

Until my next post…

Be salty, stay lit.

  2. Before I lost her, my mom and I used to Walmart shop together. We would each go our separate ways and meet up at ‘the bench’ after checking out.
She told people that she got so frustrated with my taking so long. And that it was because of my Walmart ministry. The reason I call it that is because the Lord always puts someone in my isle who needs help. Or wants to discuss things. Etc.
Even with checkers. Giving ample opportunities to share Christ’s love and truth.
There are people everywhere in the world with those needs. But for me, Walmart is where I find the most.

  14. Rainer, ‘Sometimes the most powerful witness is just being the person who is dependable, encouraging, patient, honest and kind.’ Yes. That’s the whole gospel right there. Thank you for reminding us that ministry doesn’t require a pulpit. 💙

    Much love,
