Extraterrestrial Life | Yes or No?

I’ve written before about debates like music or sports?

That one is easy for me. Music. Every time. And I love sports. Just not like I love music.

But here’s another question:

Extraterrestrial life. Yes or no?

I don’t mean little green men landing in somebody’s backyard. Ive heard they are really gray or maybe blue. But, if that happens, I’d like to be notified. What I’m really talking about is the possibility that somewhere in this enormous universe, life exists beyond Earth.

I’ve actually wondered about this for a long time. During one of my college stints, I took a class on the subject.

Recently, one Saturday evening, my mom and I were sitting on her patio after sunset when we saw something in the sky. It hovered along the tree line, red and green lights flashing on and off. It made some nifty moves in the night sky.

We watched it for a while, trying to figure out what we were seeing. Was it an airplane? A satellite? Something atmospheric? Or was it something else?

We couldn’t identify it.

The obvious answer these days would be a drone. But, this thing was big. Bigger than any drones I’ve seen. And it moved fast. Faster than I’m accustomed to things moving in the sky. It jetted from east to west in a flash of a second, emitting a bright white light from its belly onto what seemed like our pasture.

We still don’t really know.

Sometimes, I think we are a little too quick to assume that curiosity is somehow a threat to faith. Especially Christians.

I’m not sure I see it that way.

The universe is enormous. Creation is humongous. Beyond our imagination.

And the God who created it is certainly bigger than my understanding of it.

Now to him who is able to do above and beyond all that we ask or think according to the power that works in us— to him be glory in the church and in Christ Jesus to all generations, forever and ever. Amen.

Ephesians 3:20-21 CSB

If we eventually discover that Earth is the only place where life exists, I’ll still marvel at what God has made. However, should we discover life somewhere else, it won’t shake my faith in who God is.

I will have a thousand questions.

Wonder doesn’t need to compete with faith. Wonder can lead us toward worship.

The Bible begins with, “In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth.”

Notice that it doesn’t say the heavens are small. They are vast. Beautiful. Mysterious. And filled with things we still don’t understand.

Maybe there is life somewhere out there. Maybe there isn’t.

I’m not going to pretend I know. I understand enough about God to realize I can’t put limits on Him.

I am willing to keep looking up.

After all, sometimes looking up is exactly where wonder begins.

So what do you think?

Extraterrestrial life: yes or no?

Be salty, stay lit.

The same here, it didn’t happen over night it was a journey in a way , a sudden revelation in an other and ultimately a going back to home and who I am in an other way again. But one thing I’m sure it was a call, I felt it .

  4. This is a great perspective, Adam. God is big. Who am I to put limits on Him? And our mission on Earth remains the same: share the Good News of the God who so loved the world that He gave His one and only son, that whosoever believes in Him shall not perish but experience eternal life. Blessings.

  5. I understand Loring. It does mess our theology—at least it asks us to challenge ourselves and how we view God. And that can be a lot to wrap our minds around. Thanks for reading and sharing your honest thoughts. Blessings.

  6. Thank you for sharing, Ortensia. God stories are so beautiful! I’m grateful for your honesty and transparency. It takes courage to be vulnerable. Do you remember when you placed your faith and trust in Christ and came to believe in His death, burial, and resurrection?

For me, it was a journey that culminated in 2007, with me affirming my belief that Jesus, fully God, fully man, was crucified on the Cross where He died, was buried and on the third day, rose again. After a short time of revealing Himself to the disciples and others, Jesus ascended to the right-hand of the Father. Believing this to be true, I confessed my sins, repented, received forgiveness, and professed Jesus as my Lord and Savior. Hallelujah!

Cutting the long story short. I was raised catholic but never felt it and detached myself, then when I moved to Ireland I discovered Anglicanism and it was like a breath of fresh air. Unfortunately I went through a rough patch and had lots of doubts, msybrveven left so.e friends influence got to me but my rationality took me away from faith, till I was literally saved from certain death and I realised I was given a second chance, I know it sounds cliche’ but it is what it is. The realisation didn’t come immediately; it was gradual but it was like I was feeling a call towards religion again and made me feel good but there was still my rational.side that wanted to explain logically everything and I talked to a dean I know who gave me a few books to read about science and religion how they can complete each other, how one does not exclude the other. I found the answer I needed and those I didn’t find well that s when faith comes in right?
Thanks for listening🙏 have a blessed Sunday

  12. Interesting debate Rainer. If you’re asking ‘yes or no’ I say no. It messes me up theologically. Can’t wrap my mind around it.

I think we’re on the same page. If God has another world out there somewhere, that’s his business. My business is to serve him here.
