As I mentioned in a prior post, I am celebrating my 1,000th blogpost by inviting several fellow bloggers to write a guest post that I am publishing on The Devotional Guy™.

Earlier this week, David—blogger extraordinare at David’s Daily Dose—shared 3 things he learned about blogging and how he has employed them for his blogging endeavors.

Describing himself as a regular guy sharing positive thoughts from a Christian perspective, David loves to encourage others. That’s really what launched his blogging adventure.

3 (more) Things I Learned About Blogging from The Devotional Guy

(And How They’ve Worked for Me)

As I mentioned in an earlier guest post, I’ve learned many of the ins and outs of Christian blogging from The Devotional Guy. Rainer has written numerous posts where he freely shares some of his top lessons gleaned from a decade of blogging. Here are three more things I’ve learned about blogging from The Devotional Guy, and how they’ve worked for me. 

1. How long is the ideal post?

According to Rainer, quality content can be short, long, or anywhere in between. The perfect post is as lengthy as you need it to be. Thus, a narrative on addiction and recovery, a frequent topic on The Devotional Guy, runs longer than a blip about a favorite up-and-coming Christian band.

How this worked for me:  In general, I write shorter posts, around 400 words. But occasionally I’ve doubled that—if the story required it. The important thing is to keep your audience with you, no matter the post length. If it’s compelling, they’ll keep reading.  If not, you’ll lose them at, “Let me tell you about my grandchildren!”

2. Is it okay to use other bloggers ideas?

I admit, I’ve used Rainer’s site, and others, as a template. As the old saying goes, “Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery.”  But this is a far cry from copying somebody’s content and passing it off as my own. Yes, this happens in the Christian Blogosphere.😟 Successful bloggerssometimes find their posts, word-for-word, on someone else’s site but with no credit given. This isn’t the same as tapping “reblog.”

How this worked for me: I read dozens of Christian blogs and am often inspired by them. And, at times, I find a blogger so compelling I want to use what they wrote as a springboard for my own post. However, I give them credit for their content, clearly showing the line between what each of us created. 

3. How quickly can I monetize my blog and move to Cancun?🏝

Frankly, one of my favorite things about Rainer’s site is he does it for the Lord and not for a living. As far as I know, he hasn’t made a dime from a decade of blogging. This doesn’t mean a Christian shouldn’t turn their blog into a business. However, a realistic perspective is in order. The world of social media influencers is a “winner take all” market. In other words, there are a handful of Christian blogs with thousands of followers, and then there’s us.🙃

How this worked for me: Okay, okay! I frequently check my stats and want to have more views, likes, and comments than last year. However, like Rainer, I’ve chosen to make blogging a creative outlet and a way to connect with other believers. I don’t plan to monetize my site any time soon. However, if you know a shortcut from here to Cancun, we should talk. 😎 Seriously, the sooner one decides what theywant out of their blogging journey the better.
